Our client in Stratford is transforming a former industrial site into a combination of commercial property and residential flats. The Environmental Services team at J P Chick & Partners Ltd have led investigations into land contamination throughout the UK and were appointed to manage any contaminative materials on the site. A remediation implementation plan and verification plan were developed, with sampling visits conducted throughout the duration of the works to ensure the safety of both those on site and adjacent residents.
The soil was found to have been grossly contaminated, with Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, tar globules and asbestos which needed to be safely excavated and disposed of, along with a below-ground fuel tank from this former industrial site.
Throughout the process our skilled environmental engineers worked with the remediation contractor to ensure effective management of vapour and odours present within the Made Ground and impacted groundwater; utilising odour suppression units, PID monitoring stations, personnel monitoring, and qualitative odour assessments. “With such levels of contamination, it was crucial for us not only to have comprehensive monitoring throughout the duration of the works, but to have contingency arrangements in place should trigger levels have been exceeded” explains Caroline Jooste, Senior Environmental Engineer at J P Chick & Partners Ltd.
Validation sampling of soils continued as works progressed, as well as the verification of imported aggregate utilised for backfilling. J P Chick & Partners Ltd supported the specialist remediation contractor with safe environmental remediation of the site, whilst ensuring both archaeological and regulatory requirements were met.
