J P Chick & Partners Ltd Ground Investigation Progresses Planning at Business Centre Redevelopment

From late 2022, the Environmental Services team at J P Chick & Partners Ltd has provided extensive and robust contaminated land assessments and advice at the Earl Soham Business Centre in Suffolk. Our work would facilitate the progress of our client’s planning application for the demolition of the existing structures and construction of a residential development, working alongside Peter Wells Architects.

Our work on the project initially comprised a Stage I/ Tier I Geo-Environmental Desk Study, in which our expert research teams reviewed all historical and regulatory information pertaining to the site. Once the initial research was complete, the team conducted a walkover survey of the site and surrounding area, enabling us to identify any potential contaminative sources and determine the appropriate scope of work for future investigations.

This work was followed by a Stage I/ Tier II Ground Investigation by our highly qualified team. We excavated a series of hand excavated boreholes to retrieve soil samples for geochemical testing, as well as a series of dynamic sampling boreholes with combined ground gas and groundwater monitoring points. “It was important for us to review data over several visits and different weather conditions, as results are not always consistent” says Dan Fowles, Senior Environmental Engineer at J P Chick & Partners Ltd. “We need a prolonged period of data to accurately analyse gas concentrations and flow rates, enabling us to determine whether the ground gas or groundwater on site posed any environmental or human risk.

Following the submission of our initial reports, our Environmental Services team also produced a Stage II Options Appraisal and Remediation Strategy. This document detailed the remediation methods, and validation measures to be employed at the site, to ensure construction workers and future site users and the surrounding environment are protected, and that any risks to controlled waters are mitigated.
