JP Chick & Partners Ltd. provided civil and structural engineering design services for this complex contemporary extension to a Grade II listed farmhouse in Suffolk. The design incorporated bespoke oak trusses to support the vaulted roof, enabling a clear open plan for the extended living space. Natural daylight was exploited through extensive glazing on the west elevation and within the roof plane. A hybrid timber frame and steel construction was adopted to achieve the wall construction and to transfer vertical and horizontal loading to foundations . The project also involved lowering of existing floor levels within the listed dwelling to improve headroom beneath the existing timber beams. This entailed developing a staged construction sequence and utilised Glapor sub-base in conjunction with a limecrete floor slab.
