We were pleased to assist Trinity College, Cambridge with the removal of a grand piano from one location to another. This involved negotiating narrow ‘cantilevered’ stone stairs and broader, but weaker timber stairs. Our remit was to survey and assess the stairs for the applied loading of the grand piano, during the removal process. This involved careful analysis of the stresses generated within the stone steps as a result of the torsion generated and did entail the design of a timber ‘over-stair’ to strengthen the timber staircase. Fortunately there was no repeat of Laurel and Hardy’s efforts in the Music Box, and specialist removal company, Cambridge Pianoforte, managed the move without a hitch.
