St Stephen's Church, Norwich

Significant damage to the medieval church occurred following a burst water pipe in Malthouse Lane, adjacent to the 15th century church’s east gable. We were appointed by the church’s Parochial Church Council, initially to give advice on the movements and stability of the church, and subsequently, to advise on a repair system.

Due to the degree of movement, a temporary support system was installed to the east gable to limit the damage and ensure stability prior to the main work being undertaken.

Our commission included the monitoring and logging of all movement and the organisation of ground penetration radar to ascertain the area/volume of disturbed soil beneath the church. We appointed a ground investigation company to ascertain the type of foundation in use, as well as the underlying soil condition. We also undertook the design of temporary works to support the scheme, together with the design of the permanent support structure.
