Fish Pass at New Mills Pumping Station, Norwich, Norfolk
We have completed topographical surveys of the bypass sluice at New Mills Pumping Station, an historic structure on the river Wensum.
The Environment Agency is reviewing several of its river control structures along this river, as many of them impede the upstream migration of elvers and other young fish.
The proposal is to build ‘fish passes’ at these locations to provide the young fish with a specifically designed, gentle uphill gradient to allow them to continue their upstream journey. The present vertical faces of sluice gates and weirs currently prevents this.
The design of the new passes will comprise considerations of temporary damming works, build-ability and durability. The fish passes are likely to be concrete, however, reviews of aesthetics and environmental aspects will govern the final design choice.
