Justin Gardner House, Hellesdon Hospital, Norwich

Justin Gardner House was constructed as a purpose built facility to include a 10 bed psychiatric intensive care unit and a further 12 bed low security support unit incorporating associated day spaces and facilities.

Construction comprised traditional load-bearing masonry and where necessary timber laminated framework to suit the large open spaces.

We were commissioned to design a piled foundation solution to suit the poor ground conditions encountered at the site. We also designed the foul and surface water drainage systems and hard-standings. The site required a ground improvement solution before piling could commence.

We were subsequently commissioned to contribute to the design of a 4 bed extension with en-suite facilities to the Justin Gardner facility at Hellesdon Hospital.

This commission included the design of foundations, drainage system to connect to existing and roof connection elements.

We also undertook the Principal Designer role for this project. This needed a careful plan to ensure the smooth running of the existing facility causing as little disruption as possible during construction.
